Sri Lankan passport: Contact the SL High Commission in Ottawa directly (613-247-1865) and explain the emergency. An Emergency Travel Document (ETD) may be issued for one-way travel to Sri Lanka in genuine emergencies. We advise on what to say and what to bring.

Report the theft to the police immediately and get a police report reference number — this is required by both the Sri Lanka High Commission and IRCC to issue a replacement document. How quickly can I get an emergency Canadian passport? ⌄

Canada’s urgent in-person passport service can produce a passport in as little as 2 business days from the date of your appointment — but you must attend a designated Passport Canada office in person with a confirmed flight booking showing travel within 2 to 9 business days. The bottleneck is usually getting an appointment — these fill up fast. Can the Sri Lanka High Commission issue an emergency travel document the same day? ⌄

In genuine emergencies — a death in the family, serious medical emergency — the High Commission may issue an Emergency Travel Document on the same day or within 24 hours. There is no guarantee, and it depends on the individual case, the documentation you provide, and the circumstances. You must attend the High Commission in person in Ottawa and explain the emergency clearly. Call ahead (613-247-1865) before going — do not simply arrive without calling first. Is an Emergency Travel Document the same as a passport? ⌄

No. An Emergency Travel Document (ETD) is a temporary, limited-use document — typically for one-way travel to a specific destination. It is not a full passport and is not accepted for travel to most countries outside the one it specifies. It does not replace a passport for ongoing travel. Once you return to your home country, you should apply for a full passport through the normal process. We handle the full replacement passport application in parallel where possible.
