More substantive corrections — a different date of birth, a different name entirely, a change to a parent’s recorded details — usually require a court order. A deed poll is a legal document by which a person formally changes their name. It is different from correcting an error — it is used when you want to legally adopt a different name going forward, rather than fix a mistake in an existing record. In Sri Lanka, a deed poll can be executed and where required, gazetted (published in the government gazette to make it official). You may need a deed poll if you want to use a different name consistently across all your documents — we prepare and coordinate this for you.

A sworn affidavit confirming that two names refer to the same person is sometimes accepted by IRCC for minor discrepancies — particularly in spousal sponsorship applications where a name difference is minor and explainable.
