Sri Lanka issues several types of passports depending on your status and purpose. Most Sri Lankan nationals in Canada will hold or need a standard biometric passport.

Biometric Ordinary Passport (Dark Blue/Maroon)

The standard Sri Lankan passport issued to all citizens for personal travel. Valid for 10 years for adults. Contains biometric data (fingerprints and facial photo embedded in the chip). This is what most Sri Lankans in Canada hold or need to renew.

Issued to government officials travelling on official business. Not applicable for most Sri Lankans living in Canada. Requires authorisation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka.

Emergency Travel Document

Issued in urgent circumstances when a passport is lost, stolen, or expired and the person needs to travel immediately. Valid for a limited period and single journey. We assist with the emergency application process through the High Commission.

How long does Sri Lankan passport renewal take from Canada? ⌄

Processing typically takes 4–8 weeks from the date your biometrics and documents are submitted to the High Commission. The passport is produced in Sri Lanka and then returned to Ottawa. Processing times can vary based on the High Commission’s current workload. We follow up on your behalf and keep you informed throughout. Apply early — especially if you have upcoming travel plans.

Do I have to go to Ottawa in person to renew my passport? ⌄

For biometric passports, you must attend the High Commission in person to give your biometric data (fingerprints and photo). However, if you are located outside Ottawa and cannot travel, some applications can be submitted by mail after biometrics are waived in certain circumstances (e.g. elderly, disabled). Contact us and we will confirm the current process for your situation and location.

My Sri Lankan passport has expired. Can I still travel with it? ⌄

Generally, no. An expired passport is not a valid travel document. If you need to travel urgently and your passport has expired, contact us immediately — we can assist with an emergency travel document from the High Commission for urgent cases. Note that an expired Sri Lankan passport does not affect your Canadian immigration status (PR or citizenship).

I lost my Sri Lankan passport. What should I do? ⌄

Report the loss to the local police immediately and get a police report. Then contact us — we will guide you through the High Commission’s process for replacing a lost passport. You will need the police report, an affidavit, and supporting identification. Do not delay, especially if you have upcoming travel. The process for a lost passport is slightly more involved than a standard renewal, but we handle the full preparation for you.

I am now a Canadian citizen. Do I still need a Sri Lankan passport? ⌄

As a Canadian citizen, you do not need a Sri Lankan passport to live in Canada. However, many Sri Lankan-Canadians maintain a valid Sri Lankan passport for visiting Sri Lanka, ease of entry, family matters, and property-related transactions in Sri Lanka. Note that Sri Lanka does not formally recognise dual citizenship for most nationals — when entering Sri Lanka, you are generally expected to do so on your Sri Lankan passport. We advise on this during your consultation.

How do I renew my child’s Sri Lankan passport? ⌄

Children’s passport renewal requires the child to attend the appointment in person (for biometrics if over a certain age) along with both parents or guardians. Both parents must typically sign the application. If only one parent can be present, a notarised consent letter from the absent parent is required. We advise on the exact requirements and prepare all forms and documents for your child’s application.

What happens if my name has changed since my last passport? ⌄

If your name has changed (through marriage, divorce, or legal name change), you will need to submit supporting documents showing the name change — typically a marriage certificate or legal name change document. The High Commission will issue a new passport in your new name. We prepare all the required documentation and advise on exactly what the High Commission needs for your situation.
