If you submit your extension application before your current permit expires, you are automatically covered under implied status. This means you can legally continue studying and working (if your current permit allows it) while IRCC processes your application — even after your original permit’s expiry date has passed. We’ll walk you through exactly what you can and cannot do during this period.

💬 Frequently asked questions

How early should I apply to extend my study permit? ⌄

IRCC recommends applying at least 30 days before your current permit expires. In practice, we advise applying 60–90 days in advance, especially given current processing times which can stretch to 4–16 weeks. The earlier you apply, the more time you have to resolve any issues. Book a consultation as soon as you know you’ll need an extension.

Can I keep studying while my extension is being processed? ⌄

Yes — if you applied before your permit expired, you are on implied status and may legally continue studying. However, the rules around working on implied status are specific: you may continue working if your original permit allowed it, but only up to 20 hours off-campus per week during regular semesters. We explain all of this clearly during your consultation.

My program is changing — do I need a new study permit or just an extension? ⌄

It depends. If you’re moving to a new program or a higher level of study at the same or a different DLI, you generally need to extend your study permit with a new Letter of Acceptance. In some cases you may also need to update your program details with IRCC even before applying for an extension. We’ll assess your specific situation during your free consultation and tell you exactly what’s needed.

What if my study permit has already expired? ⌄

If your permit has expired, you can no longer extend it — you need to apply to restore your status. This is a separate process and must be done within 90 days of your permit’s expiry. You should not study or work while restoration is pending. Contact us immediately — we handle status restoration and will advise you on the fastest path forward.

Can I apply from inside Canada or do I need to go to a visa office? ⌄

Study permit extensions are applied for entirely online through the IRCC portal from inside Canada — you do not need to leave the country or visit a visa office. We handle the full online process on your behalf, so you can focus on your studies.

What’s the government fee for a study permit extension? ⌄

IRCC charges CAD $150 per person for a study permit extension. This is paid directly to the government and is separate from our service fee. A co-op work permit, if included, is an additional CAD $155. We’ll give you a complete cost breakdown during your free consultation — no surprises.

Do you help people across Canada or only in Toronto? ⌄
