We recommend applying at least 9 months before your PR card expires. Processing currently takes 90 to 180 days, and you don’t want to be stuck without a valid card — especially if you need to travel. Apply early to avoid complications at the airport or border.

To renew your PR card, you must have been physically present in Canada for at least 730 days (2 years) in the last 5 years. These days don’t need to be consecutive. Days spent outside Canada accompanying a Canadian citizen spouse, or working for a Canadian company abroad, may count — we calculate this carefully at your consultation.

Do not apply without speaking to us first. If you apply and IRCC determines you haven’t met the residency obligation, they can issue a removal order and you could lose your PR status. There may be options available — H&C grounds, humanitarian exemptions, or other strategies — and we’ll advise you honestly before you take any action.

If you are inside Canada, an expired PR card does not affect your PR status — you can still live and work in Canada. However, you cannot board a flight back to Canada without a valid PR card or a Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD). If you’re outside Canada with an expired card, contact us immediately — we handle PRTD applications urgently.

A PRTD is a single-journey travel document issued by a Canadian visa office abroad that allows you to board a flight to Canada when your PR card is expired or unavailable. It is applied for at the nearest Canadian embassy or consulate — for Sri Lankans this is typically the High Commission in Colombo. We assist with PRTD applications and guide you through the process urgently.

If your card is lost or stolen inside Canada, you can apply for a replacement using the same renewal process (IMM 5444). You’ll need to submit a statutory declaration explaining the loss. If it was lost or stolen while you’re outside Canada, you’ll need a PRTD first to return, then apply for a replacement card. Contact us immediately and we’ll guide you step by step.

IRCC charges CAD $50 per PR card. This fee is paid directly to the government and is non-refundable. It is separate from our service fee. We’ll give you a complete cost breakdown at your free consultation — no surprises.
