We recommend starting the process at least 6 to 8 months before expiry. Sri Lankan passport renewals from Canada take 6 to 10 weeks, and most airlines and destination countries require at least 6 months of remaining passport validity beyond your travel dates. If you wait until you have less than 6 months left, you may find yourself unable to travel while your renewal is being processed.

Yes, if it expired within the last 5 years it is generally treated as a renewal by the High Commission. If it expired more than 5 years ago, the High Commission may require you to go through the new passport application process instead. We check this at the consultation stage before any fees are committed — so you know exactly which process applies to you.

No — unlike the Sri Lankan process, Canada does not have a time limit on renewing an expired Canadian passport. A passport that expired 8 years ago can still go through the standard renewal process. You simply submit your most recent Canadian passport (expired or not) along with the renewal form and supporting documents. We prepare the full package for you.

Yes — most adult Canadian passport renewals can be submitted by mail. You send your application, old passport, photos, and supporting documents to the nearest Passport Canada processing centre by tracked mail. You do not need to visit a passport office for a standard adult renewal. Children’s passport renewals must always be done in person. If you need urgent service, you must also attend a passport office in person with proof of upcoming travel.

If your current Sri Lankan passport shows your maiden name and you want the renewed passport to reflect your married name, you’ll need to provide your original marriage certificate along with the renewal application. The High Commission may also require a deed poll if the name change was not through marriage. We handle this as part of the application preparation — no guessing about what’s needed.

Canada offers urgent in-person service at designated passport offices for travel within 2 to 9 business days, and express service for travel within 10 to 20 business days. Both require a confirmed flight booking or other proof of imminent travel. You must book an appointment at a passport office — walk-ins are not accepted. For a Sri Lankan passport renewed from Canada, the fee is USD 100 for adults and USD 50 for children under 16 — paid directly to the High Commission. For a Canadian passport, the fee is CAD 160 for a 10-year adult passport and CAD 100 for a 5-year child passport — paid to Service Canada or Passport Canada.
